Snowflake Eel (Echidna nebulosa)
The Snowflake Eel is a hardy and visually striking species, easily recognized by its mottled white, black, and yellow coloration that resembles a snowflake pattern. Known for its peaceful demeanor (relative to other eels) and impressive escape artistry, this eel adds both personality and functionality to larger fish-only or predator tanks.
Size:
Can grow up to 24 inches in length, though most remain closer to 18–20 inches in home aquariums.
Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended, with a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape.
Temperament:
Semi-aggressive but generally peaceful toward fish too large to be considered food. It may eat small fish or crustaceans, so tankmates should be chosen accordingly.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe with invertebrates—will eat shrimp, crabs, and other meaty inverts. Safe with corals, however, and suitable for reef systems without mobile invertebrates.
Diet:
Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of frozen silversides, krill, squid, or fresh seafood using tongs. Feeding 2–3 times per week is sufficient.
Tank Setup & Care:
-
Requires plenty of rockwork and hiding spots.
-
Secure all openings with a tight-fitting lid; Snowflake Eels are notorious escape artists.
-
Low to moderate flow and excellent filtration are recommended due to the eel's heavy bioload.
