Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons)
Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons)
Description:
The Black Ghost Knifefish is a unique and captivating freshwater species known for its elongated, ribbon-like body and undulating swimming motion. It has a striking black body with a white stripe running along its back and white markings on the tail. This nocturnal species uses an electric organ to navigate and detect prey in low light conditions.
Size:
Up to 20 inches (50 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 100 gallons is recommended due to their adult size and need for ample swimming space.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
The Black Ghost Knifefish is generally peaceful but can be semi-aggressive toward other bottom dwellers or similarly shaped fish. They are best suited for calm community aquariums with non-aggressive tankmates.
Group Size:
Black Ghost Knifefish are best kept singly due to territorial behavior, though they can coexist with other peaceful fish if provided enough space.
Compatibility:
They can be kept with medium to large peaceful fish such as angelfish, discus, and rainbowfish. Avoid housing them with fin-nipping species or very small fish, as they may prey on smaller tankmates.
Diet:
Carnivorous. They prefer protein-rich foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and small feeder fish. They may also accept high-quality sinking pellets formulated for carnivores.
Care Level:
Intermediate. Proper care requires a spacious aquarium with hiding spots and low lighting.
Planted Aquarium:
Black Ghost Knifefish can be kept in a planted aquarium, but plants should be sturdy or well-anchored as they may uproot delicate plants while foraging.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not recommended with small invertebrates such as shrimp or small snails, as they may be seen as prey. Larger snails may be safe but monitor closely.
Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is highly recommended, as Black Ghost Knifefish are known jumpers and may escape if the tank is not properly covered.
Additional Notes:
Black Ghost Knifefish are nocturnal and benefit from dim lighting and plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, caves, and PVC pipes. They have weak eyesight and rely heavily on their electrical sensing abilities.
