Bleeding Heart Tetra (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma)
Description:
The Bleeding Heart Tetra is a beautiful freshwater fish named for the distinctive red spot near the center of its body, resembling a heart. It has a silvery-pink body with a slightly elongated shape and elegant, flowing fins. This peaceful schooling fish adds a splash of color and elegance to community aquariums.
Size:
Up to 3 inches (7.5 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks preferred for larger schools and better stability.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C)
-
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Bleeding Heart Tetras are peaceful community fish but can become semi-aggressive if kept in small groups. They do best when kept in larger schools where their natural schooling behavior is encouraged.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger schools help minimize stress and encourage natural behaviors.
Compatibility:
Bleeding Heart Tetras are compatible with other peaceful community fish such as rasboras, corydoras catfish, dwarf gouramis, and other tetras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species due to their flowing fins.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They readily accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
Care Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. They are hardy but thrive in well-maintained aquariums with stable water parameters.
Planted Aquarium:
Bleeding Heart Tetras are an excellent choice for planted aquariums. The plants provide shelter and enhance their natural colors, while the fish's peaceful nature makes them suitable for such setups.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
They can be kept with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and shrimp. However, they may prey on very small shrimp species or shrimp fry.
Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is recommended, as they may jump when startled or during active schooling.
Additional Notes:
Bleeding Heart Tetras display their best coloration when kept in a well-maintained aquarium with subdued lighting and a darker substrate. They are generally hardy but should be kept in stable water conditions.
