Description:
The Blood Parrot Cichlid is a unique and colorful hybrid fish known for its bright orange coloration, rounded body, and beak-like mouth. This hybrid species, often a cross between Midas and Redhead cichlids, has a distinct appearance with a bulbous head and a compressed body shape. Despite their modified mouth, they can eat and thrive with proper care.

Size:
Up to 8 inches (20 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a single Blood Parrot Cichlid, with larger tanks required for multiple specimens or community setups.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C)

  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5

  • Hardness: Moderate

Temperament:
Blood Parrot Cichlids are generally peaceful but can be semi-aggressive, especially when defending territory or during breeding periods. They can coexist with other medium-sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish if space and hiding spots are provided.

Group Size:
Blood Parrot Cichlids can be kept singly or in pairs. If housed with other cichlids, ensure the tank is large enough to reduce territorial behavior.

Compatibility:
They can be kept with similarly sized peaceful to semi-aggressive species such as Severums, Firemouth Cichlids, and Silver Dollars. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish or small species that could be bullied.

Diet:
Omnivorous. They do well on high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen foods, and occasional live foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. Foods designed for cichlids with color-enhancing properties can help maintain their vibrant hues.

Care Level:
Intermediate. Proper tank maintenance and water quality are essential for long-term health, as Blood Parrot Cichlids can be prone to swim bladder issues due to their body shape.

Planted Aquarium:
Blood Parrot Cichlids are not ideal for planted aquariums as they may uproot plants while digging. If plants are desired, use hardy species like Anubias or Java Fern attached to hardscapes.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not recommended with invertebrates, as they may attempt to eat shrimp and smaller snails.

Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is recommended, as Blood Parrot Cichlids can be curious and may jump occasionally, especially when startled.

Additional Notes:
Due to their hybrid nature, Blood Parrot Cichlids have unique care requirements. Their modified mouths can make feeding challenging, so ensure food is appropriately sized and easily consumable.
