Description:

The Blue Paradise Fish is a beautifully colored labyrinth fish with iridescent blue hues and flowing fins. Its body displays shades of blue and turquoise, often accented with red striping on the fins. This species is known for its bold personality and ability to breathe atmospheric air thanks to its labyrinth organ.

Size:
Up to 4 inches (10 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a single Blue Paradise Fish. Larger tanks are advised if keeping multiple specimens due to their territorial nature.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.0 to 8.0

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate

Temperament:
The Blue Paradise Fish is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially toward other labyrinth fish and similar species. Males can be particularly aggressive with each other. They do best in a carefully planned community setup with suitable tankmates.

Group Size:
Best kept singly or as a pair. If multiple males are kept, a significantly larger aquarium with ample territories is necessary.

Compatibility:
They can be kept with peaceful, fast-moving species such as danios, larger tetras, and loaches. Avoid housing them with slow-moving fish, long-finned species, or other aggressive fish.

Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, live foods (daphnia, brine shrimp), and frozen foods.

Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, their temperament and need for specific tank setups make them better suited for experienced aquarists.

Planted Aquarium:
Blue Paradise Fish can be kept in a planted aquarium, which helps reduce stress by providing cover. However, they may occasionally disturb plants while exploring or building bubble nests.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not ideal for tanks with small invertebrates like shrimp, as they may be seen as prey. Larger snails are generally safe.

Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is highly recommended as Blue Paradise Fish can jump, especially when startled or during aggressive displays.

Additional Notes:
They are a labyrinth fish capable of breathing atmospheric air, making them more tolerant of lower oxygen levels. However, proper filtration and surface access are still necessary for optimal health.
