Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya)
Description:
The Cherry Barb is a peaceful, brightly colored freshwater fish known for its vibrant red hues, especially in males, and its streamlined body. Females display a more subdued reddish-silver coloration. This hardy schooling species is perfect for community aquariums and adds a splash of color to planted setups.
Size:
Up to 2 inches (5 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 15 gallons is recommended for a small school. Larger tanks are ideal for more extensive groups and to better display their schooling behavior.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C)
-
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Cherry Barbs are peaceful and community-friendly. Males may show mild aggression toward each other during breeding but generally coexist well with other species.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. A higher female-to-male ratio helps reduce male competition and stress.
Compatibility:
Cherry Barbs are ideal for peaceful community tanks and can be kept with species such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and small gouramis. Avoid fin-nipping species or aggressive tankmates.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Cherry Barbs thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A diverse diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration.
Care Level:
Beginner. Cherry Barbs are hardy, adaptable, and ideal for novice aquarists due to their tolerance for a range of water conditions.
Planted Aquarium:
Cherry Barbs are excellent for planted aquariums. Plants provide shelter, reduce stress, and enhance their bright coloration while mimicking their natural habitat.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with most peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp species. However, very small shrimp fry may be at risk of predation.
Additional Notes:
Male Cherry Barbs display a more intense red coloration, especially during breeding periods. They appreciate a well-structured tank with plants and driftwood for hiding spaces.
