Clown Pleco (Panaqolus maccus)
Clown Pleco (Panaqolus maccus)
Description:
The Clown Pleco is a small, beautifully patterned pleco with a dark brown to black body accented by striking yellow or orange bands. This peaceful bottom-dweller is a favorite among aquarists for its manageable size and unique appearance. Clown Plecos are primarily wood grazers and help keep driftwood clean while contributing to the overall balance of a community aquarium.
Size:
Up to 4 inches (10 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a single Clown Pleco, with larger tanks preferred for multiple individuals or community setups.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Clown Plecos are peaceful bottom-dwelling fish that rarely show aggression. They are ideal for community aquariums but may occasionally defend their territory against other plecos or similar bottom dwellers if space is limited.
Group Size:
Best kept singly or in a group with ample space and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.
Compatibility:
Clown Plecos are highly compatible with peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid housing them with aggressive cichlids or large predators.
Diet:
Primarily herbivorous. They require driftwood in their diet for fiber and are known to graze on biofilm and algae. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), and occasional protein-based foods like sinking pellets.
Care Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. They are hardy but require proper wood in the tank for dietary reasons and good water quality.
Planted Aquarium:
Clown Plecos are an excellent choice for planted aquariums. They do not typically damage plants and help control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to such setups.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with most invertebrates, including snails and shrimp. They are unlikely to prey on tankmates due to their herbivorous nature.
Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is recommended as Clown Plecos can occasionally attempt to climb or explore outside the aquarium.
Additional Notes:
Provide plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rocks, as Clown Plecos are nocturnal and prefer shelter during the day. They are a long-lived species, often living over 10 years with proper care.
