Colombian Zebra Pleco L-129 (Hypancistrus debilittera)
Colombian Zebra Pleco L-129 (Hypancistrus debilittera)
Description:
The Colombian Zebra Pleco, also known as L129, is a striking bottom-dwelling catfish featuring bold black and white stripes. This peaceful species is highly sought after for its unique appearance and relatively small size, making it suitable for well-structured aquariums with plenty of hiding spots.
Size:
Up to 4 inches (10 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a single Colombian Zebra Pleco, with larger tanks preferred for multiple specimens or community setups.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Colombian Zebra Plecos are peaceful bottom-dwellers. They are shy and tend to stay hidden during the day, becoming more active during the evening and night.
Group Size:
Best kept singly or in a small group if space and hiding spots are sufficient to reduce territorial behavior among plecos.
Compatibility:
They can be kept with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras catfish. Avoid aggressive cichlids or highly active species that may cause stress.
Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods. Their diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets. While they may occasionally nibble on vegetable matter, they are not effective algae eaters and should not be relied upon for algae control.
Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require stable water conditions and proper filtration due to their sensitivity to poor water quality.
Planted Aquarium:
Colombian Zebra Plecos are suitable for planted aquariums. They do not disturb plants but will appreciate driftwood and caves for shelter.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with most invertebrates such as shrimp and snails. Their peaceful nature and diet make them unlikely to prey on tankmates.
Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is recommended, as they may occasionally explore near the water surface or attempt to climb.
Additional Notes:
Provide plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rock structures, as Colombian Zebra Plecos prefer a well-decorated environment. They are nocturnal and prefer dim lighting conditions.
