Description:
The Congo Tetra is a stunning freshwater fish known for its iridescent scales that shimmer with hues of blue, gold, and violet. Its long, flowing fins, often with a delicate white edging, add to its elegance, making it a favorite for community aquariums. Males are more vibrant and display longer fins compared to the more subdued females.
Size:
Up to 3.5 inches (9 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks preferred for a more natural schooling effect and better water stability.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74°F to 82°F (23°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Congo Tetras are peaceful community fish. They are shy when kept in small numbers but become more confident and display their best colors when kept in proper schools.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger schools encourage natural behavior and help reduce stress, while enhancing their coloration.
Compatibility:
Congo Tetras can be kept with other peaceful community fish, including rasboras, corydoras catfish, rainbowfish, and other tetras. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species due to their delicate fins.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Occasional live foods can help enhance their coloration and health.
Care Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. They are hardy but thrive best with stable water conditions and regular maintenance.
Planted Aquarium:
Congo Tetras are well-suited for planted aquariums. The plants provide shelter, reduce stress, and help accentuate their iridescent colors.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with most peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp. However, they may prey on very small shrimp fry.
Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is recommended as Congo Tetras may jump, especially when startled or in overly bright conditions.
Additional Notes:
Congo Tetras prefer dim lighting and dark substrates, which help accentuate their natural iridescence. They thrive in a well-oxygenated tank with moderate flow.
