Desjardin's Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardini)
Description:
Behavior: The Desjardin's Sailfin Tang, also known as the Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang, is a strikingly beautiful and active species. These fish are generally peaceful when small but can become territorial and aggressive, especially as they grow larger. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots.
Color: The Desjardin's Sailfin Tang is visually stunning, featuring a body adorned with vertical yellow and dark stripes. The dorsal and anal fins are large and sail-like, adding to their unique appearance. The body color can range from dark brown to a lighter shade, with the stripes becoming more prominent as the fish matures.
Diet: Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs are primarily herbivores and thrive on a diet rich in marine algae. They will graze on algae growing in the tank and should be provided with a variety of seaweed and algae-based foods. Supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional vegetable treats like blanched spinach or zucchini can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs are generally peaceful with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species when they are small. Suitable tankmates include other tangs, angelfish, clownfish, gobies, and wrasses. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their herbivorous diet helps control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums.
Max Size: Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs can grow up to 15 inches (38 cm) in length. Due to their active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs are commonly found in the Indian Ocean, particularly around the waters of the Red Sea, the Maldives, and the coast of East Africa.
Sexual Dimorphism: Desjardin's Sailfin Tangs do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
