Green Luminous Danio (Danio rerio)
Green Luminous Danio (Danio rerio)
Description:
The Green Luminous Danio is a genetically modified variant of the Zebra Danio (Danio rerio), engineered to exhibit a vibrant green fluorescence. This fluorescence is inherited from their parents and does not fade over time. These active, schooling fish are popular for their striking appearance and energetic behavior, making them a lively addition to freshwater aquariums.
Size:
Up to 2 inches (5 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks are preferred to accommodate their active swimming and schooling behavior.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 68°F to 72°F (20°C to 22°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 8.0
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Green Luminous Danios are peaceful community fish. They are highly active and thrive in groups, displaying schooling behavior that adds dynamic movement to the aquarium.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger schools reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.
Compatibility:
They can be housed with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and small barbs. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned fish, as the danios' active nature may cause stress or fin-nipping.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet enhances their coloration and overall health.
Care Level:
Beginner. Green Luminous Danios are hardy and adaptable, suitable for novice aquarists. Regular water changes and maintaining stable water parameters are essential for their well-being.
Planted Aquarium:
They are well-suited for planted tanks. Plants provide shelter and reduce stress, and the contrast enhances their luminous coloration.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with larger invertebrates like snails. However, they may prey on small shrimp or their fry.
Additional Notes:
Green Luminous Danios are genetically modified to express fluorescent proteins, resulting in their vivid coloration. They are not dyed or injected, and their coloration is permanent and hereditary. These fish are active swimmers and appreciate a tank with open spaces and moderate water flow.
