Harlequin Rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)

Description:
The Harlequin Rasbora is a peaceful and visually striking freshwater fish known for its metallic orange body and distinctive black triangular patch that extends from the midbody to the base of the tail. This elegant schooling fish adds color and activity to community aquariums and is especially well-suited for planted tanks.

Size:
Up to 2 inches (5 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 15 gallons is recommended for a small school, with larger tanks preferred for more extensive groups and enhanced schooling behavior.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C)

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate

Temperament:
Harlequin Rasboras are peaceful community fish, making them ideal for calm aquariums. They are social and thrive in groups where they display natural schooling behavior.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger schools help reduce stress, encourage natural behaviors, and create a beautiful display.

Compatibility:
Harlequin Rasboras are highly compatible with other peaceful species such as tetras, guppies, corydoras catfish, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.

Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet including high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

Care Level:
Beginner. Harlequin Rasboras are hardy and adaptable, making them ideal for novice aquarists, though stable water conditions are recommended.

Planted Aquarium:
Harlequin Rasboras are excellent for planted aquariums. Live plants provide shelter, reduce stress, and create a natural environment where their vibrant colors stand out.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp species. However, they may prey on very small shrimp fry.

Additional Notes:
Harlequin Rasboras originate from slow-moving, tannin-rich waters, so they can benefit from subdued lighting and dark substrates, which also enhance their colors.
