Kuhli Loach (Pangio myersi)
Kuhli Loach (Pangio myersi)
Description:
The Kuhli Loach is a small, eel-like freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Its slender, serpentine body features 10 to 15 dark brown to black vertical bars against a pinkish-yellow to orange background, giving it a distinctive appearance. This nocturnal species is popular among aquarists for its unique look and peaceful demeanor.
Size:
Up to 4 inches (10 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 15 gallons is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks are preferred to provide ample space and stable water conditions.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C)
-
pH: 5.5 to 6.5
-
Hardness: Soft water (<5.0 dGH)
Temperament:
Kuhli Loaches are peaceful and shy, often hiding during the day and becoming more active at night. They are non-aggressive and do well in community tanks with other gentle species.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 5 or more. Larger groups help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors, making them more active and visible.
Compatibility:
Suitable tankmates include small, peaceful fish such as tetras, rasboras, danios, and corydoras catfish. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive species that may view them as prey.
Diet:
Omnivorous. In the wild, they scavenge for food, consuming small invertebrates and plant matter. In captivity, they accept a variety of sinking foods, including pellets, flakes, and live or frozen options like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Feeding at night can be beneficial due to their nocturnal nature.
Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, Kuhli Loaches require specific water parameters and a well-maintained environment to thrive. Regular water changes and substrate cleaning are essential to maintain water quality.
Planted Aquarium:
Kuhli Loaches appreciate planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and dense vegetation. A soft, sandy substrate is ideal, as it allows them to burrow without injuring their delicate barbels.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with larger invertebrates like snails. However, they may prey on small shrimp, especially juveniles.
Additional Notes:
Kuhli Loaches are known to burrow and hide, so ensure the tank is securely covered to prevent escapes. They are sensitive to poor water conditions; therefore, maintaining a clean tank with appropriate water parameters is crucial. Breeding in captivity is rare and challenging, often requiring specific conditions and sometimes hormonal inducement.
