Majestic Angelfish (Pomacanthus navarchus)

Description:

Behavior: The Majestic Angelfish, also known as the Blue Girdled Angelfish or Navarchus Angelfish, is a stunning and elegant species known for its vibrant coloration and graceful swimming behavior. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially towards other angelfish. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.

Color: The Majestic Angelfish is visually striking, featuring a body that is primarily orange with a brilliant blue girdle around the midsection and blue spots. The blue girdle is edged with a lighter blue, adding to the fish's overall striking appearance. Juveniles display a different pattern, with blue and white vertical bars, which change as they mature into adults.

Diet: Majestic Angelfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Majestic Angelfish can be semi-aggressive and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, other angelfish, wrasses, and groupers. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Majestic Angelfish are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to corals and invertebrates. Their foraging behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt delicate organisms, and they may nip at soft corals, stony corals, and clam mantles.

Max Size: Majestic Angelfish can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Majestic Angelfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Majestic Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
