Description:
The Panda Garra, also known as the Rainbow Garra, is a small, active freshwater fish native to the fast-flowing streams of Myanmar. Its distinctive appearance features a dark body adorned with yellowish bands, giving it a "panda-like" look. This species is popular among aquarists for its algae-eating capabilities and engaging behavior.

Size:
Typically reaches up to 3.5 inches (9 cm) in length.

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks preferred to accommodate their active nature and territorial behaviors.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 70°F to 77°F (21°C to 25°C)

  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate (2-12 dGH)

Temperament:
Generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards conspecifics. Best kept in groups of 4-6 to distribute any aggression and encourage natural behaviors.

Compatibility:
Suitable tankmates include other peaceful species that thrive in similar water conditions, such as small tetras, rasboras, and danios. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or significantly larger fish.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for algae and biofilm. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet including algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini and spinach), and occasional protein sources like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Regular feeding of plant-based foods helps maintain their health and coloration.

Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, Panda Garras require well-maintained, oxygen-rich environments with moderate to strong water flow to mimic their natural habitat. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are essential.

Planted Aquarium:
They appreciate a well-decorated tank with live plants, rocks, and driftwood, which provide hiding spots and surfaces for algae growth. Ensure the decor is securely placed, as they may attempt to dislodge items while foraging.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with larger invertebrates like snails. However, they may prey on smaller shrimp, especially juveniles.

Additional Notes:
Panda Garras are known to be escape artists; ensure the aquarium has a tight-fitting lid to prevent them from jumping out. They are also adept climbers, capable of scaling aquarium walls using their mouths. Breeding in captivity is rare and often requires specific conditions to induce spawning.
