Description:

Behavior: The Panther Grouper, also known as the Polka Dot Grouper or Barramundi Cod, is a bold and predatory species known for its striking appearance and robust nature. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially towards smaller tankmates. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and open swimming areas.

Color: The Panther Grouper is visually stunning, featuring a white to light gray body covered with numerous large black spots. This distinctive polka dot pattern makes them a standout addition to any marine aquarium. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, with juveniles often displaying a more pronounced pattern.

Diet: Panther Groupers are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Due to their predatory nature, they may eat smaller tankmates, so their diet should be carefully managed to maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Panther Groupers can be semi-aggressive and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and other semi-aggressive species. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that they might prey on. Due to their territorial nature, it is important to carefully select tankmates that can coexist with them.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Panther Groupers are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. They do not typically harm corals, but their predatory behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt delicate organisms.

Max Size: Panther Groupers can grow up to 27 inches (70 cm) in length. Due to their large size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 300 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Panther Groupers are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Panther Groupers do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
