Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid
Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid
Description:
The Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid is a hybrid cichlid known for its unique blend of features, including a stocky, round body, a parrot-like head shape, and bold black markings on a silvery-blue base. This fish is admired for its striking contrast and shimmering iridescence, making it a centerpiece fish in many aquariums. Despite its unique body structure, it is active and curious, often engaging with its environment.
Size:
Up to 5 inches (12.5 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a single Polar Blue Parrot Cichlid, with larger tanks required for multiples due to their semi-aggressive nature.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Moderate
Temperament:
Polar Blue Parrot Cichlids are semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially during breeding. They do well in species-only tanks or with other cichlids of similar size and temperament.
Group Size:
Best kept singly, in bonded pairs, or with other robust cichlids in a large enough aquarium.
Compatibility:
Compatible with other semi-aggressive cichlids such as Firemouths, Convicts, and Blood Parrots. Avoid keeping them with smaller, delicate species as they may be bullied or seen as prey.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional plant matter. A balanced diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration.
Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require regular maintenance and stable water conditions for long-term health.
Planted Aquarium:
Not ideal for planted aquariums as they may dig or rearrange decorations. If plants are desired, use hardy species like Anubias or Java Fern attached to hardscape materials.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not suitable for tanks with small invertebrates such as shrimp or snails, as they may be seen as prey.
Additional Notes:
Polar Blue Parrot Cichlids are a hybrid species and do not occur in the wild. Their unique body structure can sometimes cause limited mobility and difficulties in breeding. Provide caves and rocky decorations to mimic their preferred environment and reduce stress.
