Description:
The Red Irian Rainbowfish is a stunning freshwater species native to Lake Sentani in Papua, Indonesia. Males are particularly striking with a brilliant red, almost metallic sheen covering their entire body, while females are more subdued in coloration, displaying a silvery hue. Their shimmering scales and active schooling behavior make them a popular choice for large, well-maintained aquariums.

Size:
Up to 6 inches (15 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a school of Red Irian Rainbowfish due to their adult size and active swimming habits.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.5 to 8.0

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard

Temperament:
Red Irian Rainbowfish are peaceful community fish but can be slightly boisterous due to their size and activity level. They are best suited for tanks with other similarly sized, peaceful species.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Keeping a balanced group with multiple males and females encourages vibrant coloration and natural schooling behavior.

Compatibility:
Ideal tankmates include other peaceful species such as rainbowfish, large tetras, gouramis, and corydoras catfish. Avoid very small or delicate species that might be stressed by their size and activity.

Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A balanced diet rich in carotenoids will enhance their red coloration.

Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require clean, well-oxygenated water and regular maintenance for optimal health and coloration.

Planted Aquarium:
Red Irian Rainbowfish do well in planted aquariums with open swimming areas. Hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, and Vallisneria can be used as they won’t be disturbed by their activity level.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with larger invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp. However, very small shrimp fry may be at risk of predation.

Additional Notes:
Males develop the deepest red coloration when kept in larger groups with a good diet and optimal water conditions. They are fast swimmers, so ensure the aquarium has ample open space for schooling.
