Roseline Shark (Sahyadria denisonii)
Roseline Shark (Sahyadria denisonii)
Description:
The Roseline Shark, also known as the Denison Barb, is a striking freshwater fish admired for its torpedo-shaped body, bright red stripe running from its snout to midbody, and a shimmering silver base. Accentuated by black markings along the lateral line and hints of yellow on the tail, this active schooling fish makes a stunning addition to larger aquariums.
Size:
Up to 6 inches (15 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended due to their size and active swimming behavior. Larger tanks provide better schooling space and promote healthier behavior.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 65°F to 77°F (18°C to 25°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.8
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Roseline Sharks are peaceful but highly active. They thrive when kept in a proper school and can become stressed or nippy if kept alone or in small numbers.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Schooling helps reduce stress and prevents the occasional fin-nipping behavior sometimes seen in smaller groups.
Compatibility:
Roseline Sharks do well with other peaceful, fast-moving species such as rainbowfish, larger tetras, barbs, and gouramis. Avoid very slow-moving or long-finned fish that could be startled by their activity level.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms), and plant matter such as spirulina flakes and blanched vegetables.
Care Level:
Intermediate. Roseline Sharks require stable water conditions, good filtration, and space to accommodate their active swimming patterns.
Planted Aquarium:
Roseline Sharks can be kept in planted aquariums. Plants provide cover and contrast beautifully against their bright colors, though they may occasionally nibble on softer plants if underfed.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with larger invertebrates like snails. However, smaller shrimp and shrimp fry may be at risk of predation.
Additional Notes:
Roseline Sharks are native to fast-flowing rivers in India and prefer strong water movement with well-oxygenated water. They require regular water changes and high filtration due to their activity level and bioload.
