Description:
The Siamese Algae Eater is a highly effective algae-eating fish, known for its streamlined silver body with a bold black stripe running horizontally from head to tail. This peaceful species is often sought after for its ability to control various types of algae, including black beard algae, making it a valuable addition to community tanks. They are active swimmers and can be observed exploring the bottom and mid-levels of the aquarium.

Size:
Up to 6 inches (15 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended due to their adult size and active nature.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate

Temperament:
Siamese Algae Eaters are generally peaceful community fish but can become territorial with their own kind as they mature. They are best kept in groups where aggression can be dispersed or singly if space is limited.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 5 or more in larger aquariums or singly in smaller setups due to possible territorial behavior.

Compatibility:
Siamese Algae Eaters are ideal for peaceful community setups with tankmates like tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and gouramis. Avoid aggressive or highly territorial fish that may harass them.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for algae. While they consume a variety of algae types, they should also be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and protein-rich foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp for balanced nutrition.

Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require stable water conditions, clean aquariums, and ample space for swimming to remain healthy and active.

Planted Aquarium:
Siamese Algae Eaters are excellent for planted aquariums as they help control algae without harming healthy plants.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with snails and larger shrimp species. However, they may prey on very small shrimp or shrimp fry.

Additional Notes:
Siamese Algae Eaters are often confused with other species, such as the Flying Fox. True Siamese Algae Eaters can be identified by the continuous black stripe running through the tail fin and the lack of gold coloration above the stripe. They are effective algae grazers but should not be relied upon as the sole method for algae control.
