Description:
The Silver Arowana is a majestic freshwater predator known for its sleek, metallic silver body and long, flowing fins. Its unique appearance is further highlighted by its upward-facing mouth and long barbels extending from the lower jaw, adapted for surface hunting. Native to South America, this large, powerful fish is often seen gracefully gliding near the water's surface, making it a highly sought-after species for large aquariums.

Size:
Up to 3 feet (90 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 250 gallons is required for a single adult Silver Arowana due to their large size and need for open swimming space. Larger tanks or indoor ponds are recommended for long-term care.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate

Temperament:
Silver Arowanas are semi-aggressive predatory fish. While they may tolerate similarly sized tankmates, smaller fish are likely to be seen as prey. They can become territorial, especially in confined spaces.

Group Size:
Best kept singly due to their territorial nature and space requirements. If kept with other large fish, ensure the tank is spacious enough to minimize conflicts.

Compatibility:
Suitable tankmates include other large, peaceful to semi-aggressive species such as large catfish, bichirs, pacus, and stingrays. Avoid housing them with smaller fish, as they may be eaten.

Diet:
Carnivorous. Silver Arowanas are surface feeders and thrive on a diet of live or frozen foods such as feeder fish, shrimp, crickets, and mealworms. They can also be trained to accept carnivore pellets and frozen foods like silversides and prawns. A varied diet ensures proper nutrition and growth.

Care Level:
Advanced. Silver Arowanas require specialized care due to their large size, specific diet, and water quality needs. They are best suited for experienced aquarists with ample space and proper filtration.

Planted Aquarium:
Not recommended for planted tanks due to their size and tendency to disturb decorations. If plants are desired, floating species or hardy plants attached to driftwood or rocks may be used.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not suitable for tanks with small invertebrates, as they will be seen as prey. However, larger invertebrates like adult crayfish may coexist.

Additional Notes:
Silver Arowanas are powerful jumpers and can leap several feet out of the water. Ensure the aquarium has a tightly secured lid to prevent escapes. They require exceptional filtration and regular water changes due to their size and waste production.
