Description:
The Silver Dollar is a peaceful, schooling freshwater fish known for its round, flat body and metallic silver coloration, resembling a silver coin. This species belongs to the same family as pacus and piranhas but is entirely herbivorous and gentle. Their reflective, silvery scales make them a visually striking addition to community aquariums.

Size:
Up to 6 inches (15 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended for a group of Silver Dollars due to their adult size and need for open swimming space.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate

Temperament:
Silver Dollars are peaceful community fish. They are schooling by nature and feel most secure when kept in larger groups.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 5 or more. They are a schooling species and require a group to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.

Compatibility:
Silver Dollars can be kept with other peaceful to semi-aggressive species such as large tetras, rainbowfish, plecos, and cichlids like Severums. Avoid very small fish that could be intimidated or outcompeted for food.

Diet:
Primarily herbivorous. They thrive on a diet of high-quality veggie flakes, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini, spinach, and lettuce), and occasional fruits. They may also accept some protein-based foods like bloodworms, but a plant-based diet is essential for their health.

Care Level:
Intermediate. Silver Dollars require a spacious tank and a balanced plant-based diet. They are generally hardy but need good water quality and space for long-term health.

Planted Aquarium:
Silver Dollars are not ideal for planted aquariums, as they are known to graze on most types of live plants. If plants are desired, opt for hardy species such as Anubias or artificial plants.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with larger invertebrates such as snails but may consume smaller shrimp.

Additional Notes:
Silver Dollars are active swimmers and need a large tank with plenty of open space. They may be shy when first introduced but become bolder as they settle in. Provide driftwood or rock structures for additional cover.
