Description:

Behavior: The Squareback Anthias, also known as the Squarespot Anthias or Pink Square Anthias, is a peaceful and active species known for its striking coloration and social behavior. These fish thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and open swimming areas. Squareback Anthias are schooling fish and do best when kept in groups, typically with one male and multiple females.

Color: The Squareback Anthias is visually stunning, featuring a vibrant pink to orange body with a distinctive square-shaped spot on the male's flank. Males are more colorful, with intense pink and orange hues, while females tend to be more orange or yellow. The fins are often highlighted with bright blue or purple edges, adding to their dramatic appearance.

Diet: Squareback Anthias are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings are important to keep them healthy and active. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Squareback Anthias are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species that may intimidate them or compete for food. Keeping them in a group with one male and several females is recommended, although it can be challenging to find all at once.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Squareback Anthias are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their vibrant coloration and active swimming add dynamic movement and visual appeal to the tank. Their peaceful nature makes them a great addition to reef environments.

Max Size: Squareback Anthias can grow up to 7 inches (18 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for swimming space, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 100 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Squareback Anthias are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Squareback Anthias exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males displaying more vibrant coloration and the characteristic square spot, while females are typically more subdued in color.
