Synodontis Petricola Catfish (Synodontis petricola)
Synodontis Petricola Catfish (Synodontis petricola)
Description:
The Synodontis Petricola, also known as the Dwarf Cuckoo Catfish, is a striking bottom-dwelling species native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. It features a creamy body with dark spots and a bold black-and-white banded tail, making it highly sought after for its unique pattern. Its peaceful nature and fascinating swimming style make it a favorite among aquarists, especially in African cichlid setups.
Size:
Up to 4 inches (10 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a small group. Larger tanks are preferred when keeping them with cichlids or multiple catfish.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C)
-
pH: 7.5 to 8.5
-
Hardness: Hard (10-20 dGH)
Temperament:
Synodontis Petricolas are peaceful bottom dwellers. They coexist well with other species but can be shy and prefer plenty of hiding spots.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 3 to 6. Keeping them in groups helps encourage natural behaviors and reduces stress.
Compatibility:
Ideal tankmates include peaceful African cichlids from Lake Tanganyika or other hard-water species such as shell dwellers and Julidochromis. They can also coexist with similarly sized community fish if water parameters are compatible.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Synodontis Petricola thrive on a varied diet including sinking catfish pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter.
Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require stable water conditions and hard water suited to their native Lake Tanganyika habitat.
Planted Aquarium:
Not commonly kept in heavily planted tanks due to their preference for rocky environments. If plants are included, choose hardy species like Anubias or Java Fern attached to rocks or driftwood.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with larger invertebrates like snails. However, small shrimp may be at risk of predation.
Additional Notes:
The Synodontis Petricola is a fascinating species known for its unique breeding behavior, sometimes laying eggs alongside cichlid eggs and relying on the cichlid parents to raise their fry (cuckoo breeding). Provide plenty of caves and rocky structures for hiding.
