Asfur Angelfish (Pomacanthus asfur)

Description:

Behavior: The Asfur Angelfish, also known as the Arabian Angelfish, is a magnificent species known for its bold and somewhat territorial nature. While generally peaceful with larger tankmates, it can exhibit aggression towards other angelfish and similarly sized species, especially in smaller tanks.

Color: Asfur Angelfish are visually stunning, featuring a deep blue body with a brilliant yellow crescent-shaped patch extending from the middle of their body to their tail. Juveniles display a striking blue body with vertical white bars, which gradually change to the adult coloration as they mature.

Diet: Asfur Angelfish are omnivores with a preference for a varied diet. They thrive on a mix of high-quality angelfish preparations, marine algae, and meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings of sponges and tunicates will help mimic their natural diet and promote optimal health and coloration.

Tankmates: While Asfur Angelfish can be somewhat territorial, they are generally compatible with a variety of other marine fish, including peaceful species and larger, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include tangs, wrasses, and clownfish. It is best to avoid housing them with other angelfish or similarly shaped fish to prevent aggressive behavior.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Asfur Angelfish are not considered reef-safe. They have a tendency to nip at soft corals, stony corals, and invertebrates, making them unsuitable for most reef aquariums. They are best kept in a fish-only setup or a carefully monitored mixed reef tank with hardy coral species.

Max Size: Asfur Angelfish can grow up to 16 inches (40 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Asfur Angelfish are commonly found in the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean, particularly around the reefs of the Arabian Peninsula.

Sexual Dimorphism: Asfur Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.

Compatibility with Other Angelfish: This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. The best way to do it is to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Be sure that algae and other food is not lacking, or you will definitely have aggression problems.
