Blackcap Basslet (Gramma melacara)

Description:

Behavior: The Blackcap Basslet is a peaceful and shy species that often prefers to hide among rocks and crevices. They are generally solitary but can coexist with other non-aggressive species in a well-established aquarium. Their timid nature makes them less likely to be seen in open water, but their striking colors make them a prized addition when they do emerge.

Color: The Blackcap Basslet is a visually stunning fish, featuring a vibrant purple body with a distinctive black cap that extends from the mouth over the top of the head to just behind the eyes. This bold contrast in coloration makes them a standout in any marine aquarium.

Diet: Blackcap Basslets are carnivores and require a diet rich in protein. In captivity, they thrive on a variety of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Blackcap Basslets are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include gobies, blennies, and other small, peaceful fish. They do well in a community tank setting and are less likely to exhibit aggression when provided with plenty of hiding spots.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Blackcap Basslets are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their peaceful nature and manageable size make them an excellent choice for reef aquariums, where they add movement and beauty without disturbing other inhabitants.

Max Size: Blackcap Basslets typically grow to about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length. They are suitable for a variety of tank sizes, with a minimum recommended aquarium size of 30 gallons to provide adequate space for hiding and exploration.

Origin: Blackcap Basslets are commonly found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the Caribbean and the Bahamas. They inhabit rocky reefs and ledges, where they can find plenty of crevices to hide in.

Sexual Dimorphism: Blackcap Basslets do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
