Blue Angel (Holacanthus isabelita)
Description:
Behavior: The Blue Angel, also known as the Atlantic Blue Angelfish, is a striking and somewhat territorial species. These fish are known for their bold and curious nature. While generally peaceful, they can exhibit aggression towards other angelfish and similarly sized tankmates, especially in smaller aquariums.
Color: The Blue Angel is renowned for its vibrant blue and yellow coloration. The body is primarily a bright blue with yellow highlights on the scales. Juveniles are even more striking with a brilliant electric blue color and vertical blue and white stripes. As they mature, their coloration changes to a more muted blue with yellow accents.
Diet: Blue Angels are omnivores with a preference for a varied diet. They thrive on a mix of high-quality angelfish preparations, marine algae, and meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings of sponges and tunicates will help mimic their natural diet and promote optimal health and coloration.
Tankmates: Blue Angels can be somewhat territorial, especially in smaller tanks. They are generally compatible with a variety of other marine fish, including peaceful species and larger, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include tangs, wrasses, and clownfish. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food is not lacking to minimize aggression problems.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Blue Angels are not considered reef-safe. They have a tendency to nip at soft corals, stony corals, and invertebrates, making them unsuitable for most reef aquariums. They are best kept in a fish-only setup or a carefully monitored mixed reef tank with hardy coral species.
Max Size: Blue Angels can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: Blue Angels are commonly found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the coast of Florida.
Sexual Dimorphism: Blue Angels do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
