Description:
The Blue Angelfish is a stunning freshwater fish known for its shimmering blue hues and elegant, flowing fins. This color variant of the common angelfish is prized for its unique coloration, which becomes more vibrant under proper lighting and care. Its tall, triangular body shape and graceful swimming style make it a favorite centerpiece fish in aquariums.
Size:
Up to 6 inches (15 cm) in height.
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a small group of Blue Angelfish. Taller tanks are ideal due to their vertical growth and long fins.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Blue Angelfish are generally peaceful community fish but can become semi-aggressive, especially during breeding or when kept in smaller groups. They are best suited for calm, community setups with non-aggressive tankmates.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 4 to 6 individuals to reduce stress and aggression. Larger groups help distribute any territorial behavior.
Compatibility:
Blue Angelfish can be kept with other peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and corydoras catfish. Avoid fin-nipping species and very small tankmates that may be seen as prey.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Care Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. They are hardy but require stable water conditions and proper tank maintenance for long-term health.
Planted Aquarium:
Blue Angelfish can be kept in a planted aquarium. They benefit from the cover plants provide and their colors are enhanced against a lush, green background.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
They can be kept with larger invertebrates such as snails but may prey on smaller shrimp species, particularly baby shrimp.
Lid Recommendation:
A secure lid is recommended, as Blue Angelfish can occasionally jump, especially when startled or during feeding activity.
Additional Notes:
Provide plenty of vertical swimming space and avoid overly strong water currents, as they prefer calm waters. Breeding pairs may become aggressive toward tankmates.
