Blue Throat Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus)
Description:
Behavior: The Blue Throat Triggerfish, also known as the Bluejaw Triggerfish, is a peaceful and active species known for its striking appearance and gentle demeanor. Unlike many other triggerfish, Blue Throat Triggerfish are relatively non-aggressive and can coexist well with a variety of other marine species. They can be paired up as male and female or kept in larger groups of 5-6 with mixed males and females. They are best kept in spacious aquariums with plenty of swimming room and hiding spots.
Color: The Blue Throat Triggerfish is visually stunning, with males displaying a bright blue throat and jaw, which contrasts beautifully with their dark blue to greenish body. The fins are edged with a striking yellow margin. Females are more subdued in coloration, lacking the bright blue throat but still displaying the attractive body color and fin edges.
Diet: Blue Throat Triggerfish are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Blue Throat Triggerfish are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include tangs, wrasses, larger clownfish, and other similarly sized fish. Avoid housing them with very small fish or invertebrates, which may be seen as potential prey.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Blue Throat Triggerfish are considered reef-safe with caution. While they do not typically harm corals, they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. They are best kept in larger reef tanks where their behavior can be monitored, or in fish-only setups.
Max Size: Blue Throat Triggerfish can grow up to 9 inches (23 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 120 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: Blue Throat Triggerfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Sexual Dimorphism: Males and females of the Blue Throat Triggerfish exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males displaying the characteristic bright blue throat and jaw, while females are more subdued in coloration.
