Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon)

Description:

Behavior: The Blueface Angelfish is a bold and active species known for its striking appearance and vibrant personality. While they can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish, they generally coexist well with other non-aggressive species. They are best kept in spacious aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and rockwork to explore.

Color: The Blueface Angelfish is one of the most visually stunning marine fish. Adults feature a bright yellow face with a brilliant blue mask around the eyes, hence the name. The body is a mix of blue and yellow with intricate scale patterns, and the dorsal and anal fins are edged in bright blue. Juveniles have a completely different coloration, being dark blue with white and blue vertical stripes.

Diet: Blueface Angelfish are omnivores with a preference for a varied diet. They thrive on a mix of high-quality angelfish preparations, marine algae, and meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings of sponges and tunicates will help mimic their natural diet and promote optimal health and coloration.

Tankmates: Blueface Angelfish can be somewhat territorial, especially in smaller tanks. They are generally compatible with a variety of other marine fish, including peaceful species and larger, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include tangs, wrasses, and clownfish. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food is not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Blueface Angelfish are not considered reef-safe. They have a tendency to nip at soft corals, stony corals, and invertebrates, making them unsuitable for most reef aquariums. They are best kept in a fish-only setup or a carefully monitored mixed reef tank with hardy coral species.

Max Size: Blueface Angelfish can grow up to 15 inches (38 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Blueface Angelfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Sexual Dimorphism: Blueface Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
