Description:
The Borneo Sucker Loach is a fascinating bottom-dwelling fish known for its flattened body and ability to cling to smooth surfaces in fast-flowing waters. Its body is often marked with intricate patterns of spots and stripes, while the ventral suction-like fins help it remain stationary in strong currents. This species is a peaceful algae grazer and makes a unique addition to specialized aquariums.
Size:
Up to 2.5 inches (6 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended, with a preference for tanks designed to replicate fast-flowing river environments.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 68°F to 76°F (20°C to 24°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Borneo Sucker Loaches are peaceful and non-aggressive. They are ideal for community aquariums but should be housed with other gentle species to prevent stress.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 4 or more. Larger groups help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors like social grazing.
Compatibility:
Ideal tankmates include small, peaceful species such as rasboras, danios, white cloud minnows, and small tetras. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or very large species that may outcompete them for food or harass them.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Borneo Sucker Loaches primarily graze on biofilm and algae but should be supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach, and protein-based foods like frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require stable water conditions, high oxygen levels, and strong water currents to thrive.
Planted Aquarium:
They can be kept in planted aquariums, though they prefer setups with smooth river stones and driftwood. Hardy plants like Anubias and Java Fern attached to rocks work best in fast-flowing tanks.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Generally safe with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp. However, very small shrimp fry could be vulnerable to predation.
Additional Notes:
Borneo Sucker Loaches are often chosen for river-themed tanks due to their unique appearance and algae-grazing habits. To mimic their natural habitat, use a powerful filter to create strong water flow and provide smooth surfaces for grazing.
