Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus oualanensis)

Description:

Behavior: The Canary Blenny, also known as the Canary Fang Blenny or Oualan Forktail Blenny, is a peaceful and active species known for its vibrant coloration and engaging behavior. These fish are generally non-aggressive and can coexist well with other peaceful tankmates. They are best kept in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.

Color: The Canary Blenny is visually stunning, featuring a bright, canary yellow body that adds a splash of vivid color to any marine aquarium. Their streamlined body and elegant, forked tail make them a captivating sight as they swim gracefully through the water.

Diet: Canary Blennies are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They will accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Canary Blennies are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include gobies, clownfish, tangs, and other small, peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species to prevent stress and territorial disputes.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Canary Blennies are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their active swimming and bright colors add movement and visual interest to reef aquariums without disturbing other inhabitants.

Max Size: Canary Blennies typically grow to about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length. They are suitable for a variety of tank sizes, with a minimum recommended aquarium size of 20 gallons to provide adequate space for swimming and exploration.

Origin: Canary Blennies are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Sexual Dimorphism: Canary Blennies do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.

  • They are relatively hardy and can adapt well to captivity with proper care and a well-maintained environment.

  • Their vibrant yellow coloration and peaceful nature make them a favorite among marine aquarists.

  • Canary Blennies are often seen perching on rocks or corals, from where they can dart out to catch passing food particles.
