Description:
The Cardinal Tetra is a stunning freshwater fish known for its vivid coloration, featuring an electric blue stripe along the top half of its body and a bright red stripe that runs the entire length from head to tail. This peaceful schooling fish is closely related to the Neon Tetra but displays a more extensive red coloration, making it a favorite for aquascaped and planted aquariums.

Size:
Up to 2 inches (5 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 15 gallons is recommended for a small school, with larger tanks preferred for proper schooling behavior and water stability.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 73°F to 81°F (23°C to 27°C)

  • pH: 5.0 to 7.0

  • Hardness: Soft

Temperament:
Cardinal Tetras are peaceful community fish and thrive in calm aquariums with other gentle species. They are schooling fish and feel most secure in groups.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 8 or more. Larger schools reduce stress, promote natural schooling behavior, and create a more visually appealing display.

Compatibility:
Cardinal Tetras can be kept with other peaceful species such as rasboras, corydoras catfish, dwarf gouramis, and small shrimp. Avoid aggressive or large species that may intimidate or prey on them.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Cardinal Tetras thrive on a varied diet including high-quality micro pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A well-balanced diet helps maintain their brilliant colors.

Care Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. Cardinal Tetras are slightly more sensitive than Neon Tetras, preferring soft, acidic water conditions, but are generally hardy once acclimated.

Planted Aquarium:
Cardinal Tetras thrive in planted aquariums. Dense planting provides cover, reduces stress, and accentuates their brilliant coloration against green backdrops.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp. However, small shrimp fry may be vulnerable to predation.

Additional Notes:
Cardinal Tetras are best kept in blackwater or tannin-rich aquariums to replicate their natural Amazonian habitat. They prefer subdued lighting and a darker substrate to enhance their iridescence.
