Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum)

Description:

Behavior: The Clown Triggerfish is a bold and strikingly colorful species known for its unique pattern and vibrant personality. These fish are semi-aggressive to aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards other fish. They require a spacious and well-structured environment with plenty of hiding spots and room to swim.

Color: The Clown Triggerfish is one of the most visually stunning marine fish. The lower half of its body is covered in large, white spots against a jet-black background, while the upper half is adorned with a vivid yellow band and smaller black spots. The mouth area is bright yellow, and the dorsal fin is edged with yellow, creating a spectacular contrast of colors.

Diet: Clown Triggerfish are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. It is essential to provide them with something to chew on to help maintain their teeth, such as clams on the half shell or similar items.

Tankmates: Clown Triggerfish are generally aggressive and should be housed with larger, robust fish that can hold their own. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, groupers, and other similarly sized, aggressive fish. Avoid housing them with small, timid fish or invertebrates, which may be seen as potential prey.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Clown Triggerfish are not reef-safe. Their aggressive behavior and potential to eat smaller fish and invertebrates make them unsuitable for reef aquariums. They are best kept in fish-only setups.

Max Size: Clown Triggerfish can grow up to 20 inches (50 cm) in length. Due to their large size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Clown Triggerfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, and the Red Sea.

Sexual Dimorphism: Clown Triggerfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
