The Coral Hogfish, also known as the Mesothorax Hogfish or Black-Belt Hogfish, is a stunning and hardy species that adds vibrant color and active behavior to any marine aquarium. This hogfish features a beautiful gradient of pinkish-red hues on its front half, transitioning to a deep purple or black “belt” across the midsection, with a lighter-colored tail. Its striking coloration and bold personality make it a standout choice for both reef and fish-only aquariums.

Care Requirements:
The Coral Hogfish thrives in aquariums of at least 70 gallons, with plenty of live rock for hiding, foraging, and establishing territories. It prefers open swimming spaces combined with rocky crevices and caves for shelter. This species is robust and adaptable, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. A secure lid is recommended as hogfish are known jumpers.

Diet:
A carnivore, the Coral Hogfish enjoys a varied diet of meaty foods, including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets formulated for carnivorous fish. Feeding 2-3 times daily helps maintain vibrant coloration and optimal health.

Temperament:
The Coral Hogfish has a semi-aggressive temperament. It is generally peaceful with larger, assertive tankmates but may display aggression toward smaller, timid fish or other hogfish species. It’s best housed with other semi-aggressive fish and introduced alongside tankmates to reduce territorial behavior.

Reef Compatibility:
With Caution. The Coral Hogfish is generally safe with corals but may prey on small ornamental invertebrates such as shrimp, crabs, and snails. It’s ideal for fish-only or FOWLR (Fish-Only with Live Rock) setups if you plan to keep invertebrates.

Compatibility:
Compatible with other semi-aggressive species such as tangs, angelfish, triggerfish, and larger wrasses. Avoid housing with very small, delicate fish or other hogfish unless the aquarium is large enough to provide ample space for territories. Provide plenty of hiding spots to minimize aggression.
