Dusky Wrasse (Halichoeres marginatus)

Description:

*REEF SAFE WITH CAUTION*

Behavior: The Dusky Wrasse, also known as the Marginated Wrasse, is an active and inquisitive species known for its foraging behavior and adaptability. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially as they grow larger. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of rocks and hiding spots to explore.

Color: The Dusky Wrasse is visually striking, featuring a body adorned with shades of green, yellow, and brown. Juveniles have a more vibrant coloration with bold patterns, while adults display more subdued colors with intricate markings.

Diet: Dusky Wrasses are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Dusky Wrasses can be somewhat territorial and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and groupers. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted for food.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Dusky Wrasses are generally considered reef-safe, but they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. They do not typically harm corals, but their foraging behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt delicate organisms. They are also excellent for flatworm pest control in reef tanks.

Max Size: Dusky Wrasses can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 75 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Dusky Wrasses are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Dusky Wrasses exhibit slight sexual dimorphism, with males being larger and displaying more intense coloration compared to females.
