Flagfin Angelfish (Apolemichthys trimaculatus)

Description:

Behavior: The Flagfin Angelfish, also known as the Three-Spot Angelfish, is a stunning and active species known for its vibrant colors and inquisitive nature. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially towards other similar species. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.

Color: The Flagfin Angelfish is visually striking, featuring a body adorned with bright yellow coloration and three distinctive black spots: one near the eye, one on the forehead, and one on the body. A unique feature of this angelfish is its distinctive purple "lipstick" around its mouth, adding to its captivating appearance. The dorsal fin is often highlighted with a blue edge, enhancing their striking look. Juveniles and adults have similar color patterns, with juveniles being more brightly colored.

Diet: Flagfin Angelfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Flagfin Angelfish can be somewhat territorial and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and groupers. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Flagfin Angelfish are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs and can nip at corals. Their behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt coral placements.

Max Size: Flagfin Angelfish can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Flagfin Angelfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Flagfin Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
