Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus)

Description:

Behavior: The Flame Hawkfish is a bold and engaging species known for its vibrant coloration and unique perching behavior. These fish are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards other hawkfish. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and overhangs where they can perch and observe their surroundings.

Color: The Flame Hawkfish is visually striking, featuring a bright red to orange body with a distinct, fiery appearance. Their vivid coloration makes them a standout addition to any marine aquarium. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, with adults often displaying more intense hues.

Diet: Flame Hawkfish are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Flame Hawkfish can be somewhat territorial and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and other semi-aggressive species. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted for food. Be cautious with small invertebrates, as Flame Hawkfish may prey on shrimp and other small crustaceans.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Flame Hawkfish are generally considered reef-safe with caution. While they do not harm corals, they may prey on smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. Their perching behavior can also disturb delicate coral placements, so careful monitoring is required.

Max Size: Flame Hawkfish can grow up to 3.5 inches (9 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for perching spots, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 30 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Flame Hawkfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region and around the Great Barrier Reef and Micronesia.

Sexual Dimorphism: Flame Hawkfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
