French Angelfish (Pomacanthus paru)
Description:
Behavior: The French Angelfish is a majestic and active species known for its bold personality and stunning appearance. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially towards other similar species. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.
Color: The French Angelfish is visually striking, featuring a body adorned with black scales edged in gold, giving it a sparkling effect. Juveniles display a completely different coloration, with bright yellow bands running vertically across their black bodies. As they mature, the juvenile colors transition into the adult's distinctive pattern.
Diet: French Angelfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: French Angelfish can be somewhat territorial and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and groupers. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: French Angelfish are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs and can nip at corals. Their behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt coral placements.
Max Size: French Angelfish can grow up to 16 inches (40 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: French Angelfish are commonly found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the Caribbean, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Sexual Dimorphism: French Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
