Description:
The Hawaii Platy is a striking variety of platyfish known for its bold contrast of deep black and bright golden-orange coloration. The body transitions from a vibrant yellow-orange near the head to a dark black along the midsection and tail. Its dorsal fin and caudal fin often have orange highlights, making this platy a visually stunning addition to community aquariums.

Size:
Up to 2.5 inches (6 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks are preferred for breeding colonies and enhanced water stability.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.8 to 8.0

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard

Temperament:
Hawaii Platies are peaceful community fish that thrive in calm aquariums. They are social and non-aggressive, making them ideal for a mixed-species setup.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 5 or more. A ratio of 1 male to 2-3 females is recommended when keeping mixed groups to minimize stress and excessive breeding.

Compatibility:
Hawaii Platies are highly compatible with other peaceful species such as guppies, mollies, corydoras catfish, and small tetras. Avoid aggressive species or large predatory fish.

Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Occasional plant matter like blanched spinach or spirulina-based foods helps balance their nutrition.

Care Level:
Beginner. Hawaii Platies are hardy and well-suited for novice aquarists due to their adaptability and ease of care.

Planted Aquarium:
Hawaii Platies do well in planted aquariums, as plants provide shelter, reduce stress, and offer fry protection. They do not damage plants, making them an excellent choice for live plant setups.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp. Small shrimp fry could be at risk of predation.

Additional Notes:
Hawaii Platies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming fry. If breeding is not desired, consider keeping only males or providing ample plant cover for fry protection. Their vibrant colors make them a favorite choice for aquascaped tanks.
