The Indigo Dottyback is a beautiful hybrid dottyback, combining the best traits of the Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani) and the Striped Dottyback (Pseudochromis sankeyi). Known for its stunning mix of deep purple and blue hues with subtle striping, this fish brings both elegance and personality to any saltwater aquarium. Hardy and easy to care for, the Indigo Dottyback is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.

Appearance: The Indigo Dottyback exhibits a striking mix of colors, blending the rich purple body of the Orchid Dottyback with the elongated, subtle striping of the Striped Dottyback. Its sleek body and vibrant coloration make it a standout addition to any marine aquarium.

Behavior: While dottybacks are known for their territorial nature, the Indigo Dottyback is generally less aggressive than some of its relatives, making it a good choice for community tanks. They are highly active and love to dart in and out of rock formations, making them fun to observe. However, they may show aggression towards other small, similarly shaped fish, so tankmate selection is important.

Diet: Indigo Dottybacks are carnivores and thrive on a diet rich in meaty foods. They readily accept high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feedings of varied, protein-rich foods will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.

Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a single Indigo Dottyback, though larger tanks with plenty of live rock provide a more comfortable environment. They enjoy having caves and crevices to retreat into when feeling threatened. Keeping water parameters stable and providing adequate hiding spots will help them feel secure.

Tankmates: The Indigo Dottyback can coexist with a variety of tankmates, including larger peaceful fish such as clownfish, tangs, and wrasses. However, they may become aggressive towards smaller fish or other dottybacks, so it’s best to avoid housing them with similar species unless the tank is large enough to establish separate territories.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Indigo Dottybacks are reef-safe and will not harm corals. However, they may prey on very small ornamental shrimp or invertebrates, so caution should be taken when adding them to tanks with delicate or tiny crustaceans.

Max Size: The Indigo Dottyback grows up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length, making it a compact but bold addition to reef and community tanks alike.

Origin: This hybrid dottyback is captive-bred, ensuring they are hardy, adaptable, and better suited for aquarium life compared to wild-caught specimens. Captive breeding also helps reduce pressure on wild populations.
