How to get started

  1. Purchase the kit online for local pickup or in store.

  2. Place the tank on a level, sturdy surface away from direct sunlight and vents.

  3. Put rock directly on the glass, then pour sand around it.

  4. Slowly add premixed saltwater. Add a clarifier packet if included in the sand once running.

  5. Plug in return pump(s) and heater; set 78–79°F; confirm flow through back chambers.

  6. Mount and power the 12" LED. (No lights for the first week)

  7. Add bottled bacteria as directed.

  8. Within 24 hours, add your first hardy fish using your livestock credit.

The Nitrogen Cycle (saltwater)

  • Fish waste and food become ammonia (toxic).

  • Bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite (toxic).

  • Other bacteria convert nitrite to nitrate (less toxic).

  • You remove nitrate with water changes and filtration.

For the first 4–6 weeks:

  • Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate 1–2 times per week.

  • Do not add additional fish if ammonia or nitrite is above 0.25 ppm.

  • Once ammonia and nitrite stay at 0 and only nitrate shows, the tank is cycled.

Topping Off vs Water Changes

  • Evaporation: only freshwater evaporates, salt stays.

  • Top offs: use freshwater only (RO/DI or distilled) to keep salinity stable.

  • Water changes: remove old saltwater and replace with new premixed saltwater.

Topping off with saltwater will slowly raise salinity and stress livestock.
