Description:
Behavior: The Melanurus Wrasse is a peaceful and active species known for its vibrant coloration and beneficial behavior in controlling pests. These fish are generally non-aggressive and can coexist well with other peaceful tankmates. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, sand, and open swimming areas.
Color: The Melanurus Wrasse is visually stunning, featuring a body adorned with a mix of green, blue, and yellow hues. The body is marked with horizontal stripes and a distinctive tail spot. The fins are often edged with bright colors, adding to their overall striking appearance. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, though juveniles may display more intense coloration.
Diet: Melanurus Wrasses are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Melanurus Wrasses are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species that may intimidate them or compete for food. They are beneficial in reef tanks as they help control pests such as flatworms and other unwanted invertebrates.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Melanurus Wrasses are generally considered reef-safe with caution. They may prey on small shrimp and other tiny crustaceans like hermit crabs. Their pest control behavior and vibrant appearance make them a popular choice for reef aquariums.
Max Size: Melanurus Wrasses can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for swimming space, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 50 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: Melanurus Wrasses are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Sexual Dimorphism: Melanurus Wrasses do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
