Miniatus Grouper (Cephalopholis miniata)

Description:

Behavior: The Miniatus Grouper, also known as the Coral Hind or Coral Grouper, is a bold and active species known for its striking coloration and predatory behavior. These fish are generally aggressive and territorial, especially towards smaller tankmates and other groupers. They can become more aggressive as they age and may eat smaller tankmates or anything that can fit in their mouth. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots.

Color: The Miniatus Grouper is visually stunning, featuring a bright red to orange body adorned with numerous small blue spots. These vibrant colors make them a standout addition to any marine aquarium. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, with juveniles often displaying more intense hues.

Diet: Miniatus Groupers are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Miniatus Groupers can be quite aggressive and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and other semi-aggressive species. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that they might prey on. Due to their aggressive nature, it is important to carefully select tankmates that can coexist with them.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Miniatus Groupers are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. They do not typically harm corals, but their predatory behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt delicate organisms.

Max Size: Miniatus Groupers can grow up to 14 inches (35 cm) in length. Due to their large size and aggressive nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Miniatus Groupers are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Miniatus Groupers do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
