Description:
The Neon Tetra is a classic and vibrant freshwater fish, known for its shimmering blue body and striking red stripe that runs along the lower half of its body. This peaceful schooling species is a favorite in the aquarium hobby for its small size, brilliant colors, and ease of care, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Size:
Up to 1.5 inches (4 cm)

Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small school, with larger tanks ideal for bigger groups and enhanced schooling behavior.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C)

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.0

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate

Temperament:
Neon Tetras are peaceful community fish, making them ideal for calm aquariums with similarly gentle species. They thrive when kept in proper schools and tend to stay in the midwater column.

Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger schools help reduce stress, encourage natural schooling behavior, and create a more visually appealing display.

Compatibility:
Neon Tetras are highly compatible with other peaceful species such as rasboras, guppies, corydoras catfish, and small shrimp. Avoid aggressive or large species that may view them as prey.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Neon Tetras thrive on a varied diet including high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. A balanced diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration.

Care Level:
Beginner. Neon Tetras are hardy and well-suited for novice aquarists but thrive best with stable water conditions and proper school sizes.

Planted Aquarium:
Neon Tetras are ideal for planted aquariums. The plants provide cover, reduce stress, and create a natural setting where their vibrant colors stand out beautifully.

Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp species. However, small shrimp fry may be at risk of predation.

Additional Notes:
Neon Tetras prefer slightly subdued lighting and darker substrates, which help accentuate their natural iridescence. They are often mistaken for Cardinal Tetras but can be distinguished by their shorter red stripe.
