Description:
The Pea Puffer, also known as the Dwarf Pufferfish, is a captivating freshwater species known for its small size and bold personality. Native to India, this tiny puffer has a round body with vibrant yellow-green coloration and dark, irregular spots. Despite its small size, it is known for its curious and sometimes territorial behavior.
Size:
Up to 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 5 gallons is recommended for a single Pea Puffer. If keeping multiple, 10 gallons or more is ideal, with ample hiding spaces to reduce aggression.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74°F to 82°F (23°C to 28°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Pea Puffers are semi-aggressive despite their small size. They can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks, and may nip at the fins of slower-moving or long-finned tankmates.
Group Size:
Best kept singly or in small groups with a ratio of 1 male to 2-3 females if space allows. Ensure plenty of plants and hiding spaces to minimize aggression.
Compatibility:
Due to their fin-nipping tendencies, Pea Puffers are best kept in species-only tanks or with fast-moving fish that can avoid conflict. Avoid slow-moving or long-finned species.
Diet:
Carnivorous. Pea Puffers are micro-predators and require a protein-rich diet. They thrive on live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and pest snails. They do not typically accept dry foods.
Care Level:
Intermediate. Pea Puffers require high-quality water conditions, a balanced protein diet, and careful monitoring of their behavior to prevent aggression.
Planted Aquarium:
Pea Puffers thrive in densely planted aquariums. Live plants provide cover, reduce stress, and help mimic their natural habitat.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not suitable for tanks with invertebrates. Pea Puffers will prey on shrimp and snails, making them excellent for controlling pest snail populations.
Additional Notes:
Pea Puffers have a fascinating hunting behavior and will actively stalk their prey. They do not require brackish water and should be kept in fully freshwater setups.
