Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum)

Description:

Behavior: The Purple Tang is a striking and active species known for its vibrant coloration and bold personality. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially towards other tangs. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.

Color: The Purple Tang is visually stunning, featuring a body adorned with a deep, vibrant purple coloration and highlighted with lighter spots and streaks. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are often edged in bright yellow, adding to their striking appearance. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, with juveniles having more pronounced spots.

Diet: Purple Tangs are primarily herbivores and thrive on a diet rich in marine algae. They will graze on algae growing in the tank and should be provided with a variety of seaweed and algae-based foods. Supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional vegetable treats like blanched spinach or zucchini can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Purple Tangs are generally semi-aggressive and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, clownfish, and wrasses. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Purple Tangs are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their herbivorous diet helps control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums.

Max Size: Purple Tangs can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Due to their active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Purple Tangs are commonly found in the Red Sea and the Western Indian Ocean.

Sexual Dimorphism: Purple Tangs do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
