Pygmy Angel (Centropyge argi)
Description:
Behavior: The Pygmy Angel, also known as the Cherub Angelfish, is a small and active species known for its vibrant coloration and bold personality. These fish are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially towards other dwarf angels. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots. Pygmy Angels are known for their constant grazing on algae and exploring their surroundings.
Color: The Pygmy Angel is visually stunning, featuring a deep blue body with a vibrant yellow to orange face. The fins are often edged with a lighter blue, adding to their overall striking appearance. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, although the intensity of the colors may increase with age.
Diet: Pygmy Angels are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Pygmy Angels are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species that may intimidate them or compete for food. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Of all the Centropyge angels, Pygmy Angels are the least likely to eat coral. While they are generally considered reef-safe with caution, they may occasionally nip at soft corals and sponges. Their behavior can disturb the substrate, so careful monitoring is required when adding them to a reef aquarium.
Max Size: Pygmy Angels can grow up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. Due to their small size and active nature, they can initially be housed in a 30-gallon aquarium but will require a larger tank as they grow. A spacious aquarium of at least 70 gallons is recommended for adult Pygmy Angels to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: Pygmy Angels are commonly found in the Western Atlantic region, particularly around the waters of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and Florida.
Sexual Dimorphism: Pygmy Angels do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
