Description:
The Ruby Tetra is a small, brilliantly colored freshwater fish known for its shimmering ruby-red body and translucent fins. This species is particularly eye-catching in well-planted aquariums, where its vibrant hues can shine under soft lighting. Ruby Tetras are peaceful and thrive in calm community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
Size:
Up to 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks are ideal for larger schools and improved water stability.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C)
-
pH: 5.0 to 7.0
-
Hardness: Soft
Temperament:
Ruby Tetras are peaceful community fish, best suited for calm aquariums with gentle tankmates. They may appear shy when kept in small groups but become more confident in larger schools.
Group Size:
Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger schools help reduce stress, encourage natural schooling behavior, and enhance their coloration.
Compatibility:
Ruby Tetras are ideal for peaceful community tanks and can be kept with other small species such as ember tetras, celestial pearl danios, chili rasboras, and corydoras catfish. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish.
Diet:
Omnivorous. They thrive on a diet of high-quality micro pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet helps maintain their bright red coloration.
Care Level:
Beginner to Intermediate. Ruby Tetras are hardy but require stable, soft water conditions for long-term health and vibrant coloration.
Planted Aquarium:
Ruby Tetras thrive in heavily planted aquariums with soft lighting. Live plants provide natural cover, reduce stress, and enhance the appearance of their ruby-red coloration.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Safe with peaceful invertebrates such as snails and larger shrimp. However, very small shrimp fry could be at risk of predation.
Additional Notes:
Ruby Tetras do best in blackwater or tannin-rich setups that mimic their natural habitat. Dim lighting and a dark substrate help emphasize their ruby coloration even further.
