Smith’s Blenny (Meiacanthus smithi)

The Smith’s Blenny, also known as the White-Lined Combtooth Blenny, is a small and striking fish that is both beautiful and fascinating to observe. Known for its unique coloration and active behavior, this blenny is an excellent addition to community aquariums. Its hardy nature and peaceful temperament make it a popular choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.

Appearance: The Smith’s Blenny features a slender body with a predominantly white to pale yellow coloration accented by striking black lines that run horizontally from its head to its tail. Its sleek body and vibrant markings make it an eye-catching species in any tank. This blenny’s constantly moving fins add to its charm, giving it a lively and animated appearance.

Behavior: Smith’s Blennies are peaceful and active fish that spend much of their time swimming near rocks or darting around the midwater areas of the aquarium. Unlike some other blenny species, they are not as territorial and are well-suited for community tanks. They are known for their quick and agile movements, making them a joy to watch. They also exhibit a unique defense mechanism: venomous fangs that deter predators, though they are harmless to humans when handled properly.

Diet: Smith’s Blennies are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They enjoy a mix of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and brine shrimp. They may also graze on algae or detritus in the tank, helping to keep the environment clean. Providing a diverse diet ensures they maintain their vibrant coloration and health.

Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is sufficient for a Smith’s Blenny. They prefer aquariums with plenty of live rock, as they enjoy darting in and out of crevices for both security and exploration. Stable water conditions and proper filtration are crucial for keeping them healthy. These fish do well in tanks with moderate water flow and lighting.

Tankmates: Smith’s Blennies are peaceful and can coexist with a wide variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and small angelfish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish that may bully or outcompete them for food. They are typically non-territorial, making them easy to integrate into a community setup.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Smith’s Blennies are reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. Their peaceful nature and algae-grazing habits make them an excellent addition to reef tanks. They help control algae growth and add dynamic movement to the aquarium without disturbing other inhabitants.

Max Size: The Smith’s Blenny grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length, making it a compact and manageable species for small to medium-sized aquariums.

Origin: This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Indian Ocean. They are often found in shallow reefs and lagoons, where they inhabit rocky crevices and coral outcroppings.
